The music is raw, but often their sheer enthusiasm makes it seem larger than the one guitar, two drums and a cymbal they are equipped with. Their pure, unrefined energy takes their sound, rolls it around in its mouth for a while and then spits it into your face. And you love it.

Melbourne's Digger & The Pussycats are one of the city’s most exciting exports in years, having built a reputation both locally and internationally as a unique live performance that has to be seen to be believed. Combining a myriad of musical styles ranging from 60’s garage-punk right through to blues and party rock and roll, the band has won over audiences in both hemispheres through relentless touring and their prolific catalogue of releases. 

After the success of their 2004 debut "Young, Tight & Alright" the boys returned with “Watch Yr Back” a follow-up that was packed with surprises that has been lauded in the press of such far-reaching places as USA, Europe, Japan and even Israel!!!. The common thread between each of the band’s recordings is that boundaries are pushed at both ends, with a good mix of melodic-yet-trashy pop songs and hard-hitting punk screamers.

This music has seen the band hit the road in a big way, having toured Europe in each of the past 5 years, amassing close to 200 shows on the continent since their first trip in 2004. With Europe well and truly conquered, the boys were also invited to play at the world’s premier garage festival, Gonerfest in Memphis 2007. The festival coincided with a successful 6 week tour of the USA and South Korea.

The first half of 2008 was also busy for the Pussycats, releasing both a new studio album “let’s Go To Hospital” and a Europe-only live LP “Bad Reception. Following yet another smash and grab 7 week tour of Europe, the boys kissed each other goodbye for eight months as Andy unsuccessfully tried to join a post-rock band in Glasgow.

Alas, Digger & The Pussycats are now back, and have begun work on their fourth studio album and are eagerly awaiting a forthcoming 7” release on Slovenly Recordings, their first  in the US market. You better watch out because Digger & The Pussycats are coming for your back, your ears and your heart. Check them out while you still can.

Depuis qu’il nous a quitté, la planète n’a de cesse de rendre un hommage (mérité il faut bien le dire !) à St Johnny Cash. C’est cette fois les australiens Digger & the Pussycats et les bretons Stout Brothers qui s’y collent sur un 45t intitulé The Man is Back (ça a tout d’une série ça , non ?). Bien leur en a pris en tout cas tant les versions sont bandantes ! Dans l’hémisphère sud, on retrouve un “San Quentin” plombé, gorgé de fuzz et de feedback avec un piano à un doigt (et une touche... V.U.), comme une relecture irrévérencieuse à la Jesus & the Mary Chain.
Sur l’autre face, les consanguins rennais s’en donnent à coeur joie sur un “Folsom Prison Blues” rugueux et alcoolisé... comme une vieille descente de lambic. ‘de Dieu !

Digger & the Pussycats: "Alsof Nederland zoveel beter is dan Australië"
Tijdens de afgelopen tour van de Australische garagepunkband Digger And The Pussycats verkocht het duo een speciale 7”, getiteld Live at World Cup 2006. De binnenkant van het sober vormgegeven hoesje staat vol met heel oude foto’s van de Duitse Bundesligaclub Arminia Bielefeld en ons eigen FC Utrecht. Op de achterzijde staat echter de werkelijke oorzaak van dit bijzondere plaatje beschreven.

Vast ja. Tijd voor KindaMuzik om het duo eens te vertellen dat Australië geen schijn van kans maakt. Terwijl gitarist Sam een meisje probeert te versieren, praten we met drummer Andy over het WK. “Maakt niet uit, Sam weet toch niets van voetbal,” meldt Andy droog.
Hoe is die single tot stand gekomen?
“Twee jaar geleden traden we op in Nederland op de dag dat het Nederlands elftal op het EK moest spelen. Op het podium schreeuwden we de hele tijd ‘hup, Holland, hup!’ Fistful Of Records leek het na die vreemde avond een leuk idee om van liveopnames uit Nederland en Duitsland een single te maken. Toen Australië zich ook kwalificeerde hebben we nog twee livenummers uit Australië toegevoegd. Fistful Of Records uit Utrecht en P.Trash uit Bielefeld hebben het vervolgens uitgebracht, vandaar de foto’s van die clubs in het boekje.”
Ben je voetbalfan?
“Ik ben meer fan van Australisch voetbal. Ken je dat? Die sport is moeilijk te beschrijven. Het is eigenlijk een afgeleide van koala-kicken en krokodillenworstelen. Je let niet op de bal maar rost alles aan gort. Vroeger zat ik zelf op voetbal, maar later vond ik muziek interessanter. Voetbal is een grote sport in Australië, voornamelijk omdat er veel Europeanen wonen. Alle wedstrijden van het WK worden uitgezonden, net als de Champions League en dat soort competities. Het zal nog wel populairder worden nu we eindelijk eens zelf meedoen. Veel mensen zullen tot laat opblijven om alles te volgen en zich de volgende dag ziek melden op hun werk.”
Allemaal dankzij Guus Hiddink, toch weer een Nederlander…
“Jullie man in Eindhoven…ach ja, hij heeft het ook met Zuid-Korea geflikt vier jaar geleden. Alsof Nederland zoveel beter is dan Australië. We fucking kill you! Iedereen denkt dat Australië slecht is, maar we hebben wel mooi Brazilië en Engeland verslagen. Onze verdediging is niet zo sterk, maar het middenveld is echt goed. Daar staan onder meer Brett Emerton van Blackburn Rovers en Marco Bresciano van Parma. Mensen realiseren zich niet dat we drie spelers uit de Serie A hebben en bijna twintig uit de Premier League. Het zijn goede spelers. Probleem is dat ons team moeilijk op elkaar ingespeeld raakt, omdat de spelers voor de kwalificatie niet door hun Europese clubs worden vrijgegeven om helemaal naar de andere kant van de wereld te vliegen voor een wedstrijdje Fiji–uit. En de spelers zelf hebben er ook geen zin in want ze zijn na zo’n avontuur helemaal naar de kloten. Eigenlijk heeft het échte Australische elftal nog nooit samen gespeeld, dus daarom denk ik ook dat we sterker zijn dan iedereen denkt.”
Oké, zeg het maar dan. Hoe ver gaan jullie komen?
“Brazilië wordt eerste in de groep, wij tweede, Kroatië derde en Japan vierde. Als dat lukt denk ik dat we er in de ronde daarna uit liggen. Uiteindelijk zal Italië winnen, laat ik eens gek doen. Ik haat Brazilië en Frankrijk, Duitsland is niet goed genoeg en Engeland ook niet. Over Nederland zeg ik lekker niets.”
Later die avond lopen we gitarist Sam tegen het lijf. “Gaan we het interview nog doen?” vraagt hij.
Hebben we net al met Andy gedaan, dus dat zit al goed.
“Dat is maar goed ook, want ik weet niets van voetbal. Trinidad en Tobago gaat wereldkampioen worden, dat is het enige dat ik weet.”
Je hebt niets met het spelletje?
“Niet echt, maar ik vind de randverschijnselen wel leuk. Tijdens onze tour door Duitsland een paar jaar geleden zaten we in een plaatselijke McDonalds. Daar had je naast het Happy Meal ook een Oliver Kahn-meal! Haha! Zie je het voor je?! Met dat grote vierkante hoofd op je hamburgerverpakking! That was my finest football moment.”

Notre envoyé spécial à Melbourne les a cuisinés serré et le résultat n'est pas à mettre sous tous les yeux ! Extrait : "Bon, maintenant faut que j'aille chier.... On a bouffé une grosse pizza bien grasse... Continuez sans moi les gars !".

Am 23.05.2005 hat die australische Band Digger & The Pussycats einen Song in Oldenburg aufgenommen. Geo´s music hat die gelegenheit genutzt und ein kurzes Interview gemacht. Wie das Bild evtl. vermuten läßt, wurde nicht nur dumm rumgequatscht.
